Support a Soldier Event Set for Sat, Dec 2nd in the Business Center
Colonel Patrick Soos, from GI, approached Seema and me last year and suggested having a special shipping event to benefit our men and women who are serving in the armed forces from Grand Island. We told him that it would be a great idea for this year’s Veteran’s Day celebration. However, we could not make that deadline. Nonetheless, the Colonel insisted that we should do a holiday shipping event for active military and we loved the idea.
A few weeks ago, Colonel Soos teamed up with the VFW on the Island and planned to host this event at our location. We mutually agreed on December 2nd as the only viable date because so many other events were taking place this year in our facility.
So, we are planning to host this event tomorrow at our business center (side of the building) from 10 am to 5 pm. Many donations have already begun pouring in from community members. You are more than welcome to join us and please bring a friend or family member.
Here’s part of last week’s press release from the Dispatch:
“Organizers of the event ask Islanders to send service members’ names and mailing addresses to the DeGlopper VFW Post by Dec. 1. The Island Ship Center and Momma De’s Mixing Bowl will provide discounted items to help build a box to ship to one or more service members.
Supporters can donate to this event through cash contribution or dropping off items at the VFW Post or the Island Ship Center, 1879 Whitehaven Road. Each box will cost approximately $20 in shipping costs.”
We hope to see all of you on Saturday so that we can send a gift box to each and every single active duty soldier from Grand Island this holiday season. Many children from the different schools have also brought in hand written cards to include in each box.
We’re truly excited to host this event and hope to do it each year as an annual holiday tradition for our brave men and women who cannot be with their families during the holidays.
